Help, I’m being tortured..our grocery store just added a Starbucks! The minute I walk through the doors I can smell the wonderful aroma of coffee. I am always so tempted to stop and grab a drink. The bad part is they have pictures of all these blended coffees that look delicious, but I know one of those drinks would crush my daily calories. Instead of ordering an indulgent coffee drink I order tea, but today I noticed Green Tea Lemonade on the menu. I’m instantly hooked and head home to make my own version…
Green tea comes from the leaves of Camellia sinensis. Unlike black teas, the leaves of green tea are not fermented. To preserve the polyphenols green tea is made by steaming and drying the leaves. On the packages of tea, you will see statements such as “190mg protective antioxidants” or “Natural Antioxidants.” Those antioxidants come from flavonoids. They scavenge free radicals and have anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds of which are classified as catechins. Polyphenol epigallocatechin (EGCG), the most bioavailable active ingredient in green tea have been shown to penetrate the body’s cells and protect them from free radicals.
- Studies have shown that green tea can protect against cancer, lower cholesterol, and aid in weight loss.
- One cup of green tea provides 50-150mg of polyphenols.
- The longer you steep your tea the higher the concentration of flavonoids
I use Tazo’s Zen Green Tea Blend to make my green tea lemonade. I love the hint of mint that it lends to the lemonade.
- 1 cup water
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (5 lemons)
- 3 cups brewed Tazo Zen green tea
- 6 cups water
- In a small saucepan heat 1 cup water and sugar over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
- In a large pitcher combine lemon juice, syrup, green tea and water.
- Serve over ice.
My Green Tea Lemonade is a perfect thirst quenching drink. It is a beautiful blend of Tazo’s Zen Green Tea and Fresh Squeezed Lemonade. With every drink, you get all the flavor of green tea with slightly tart lemonade. Now, I can save my money for other indulgences.
