Blend fresh sweet strawberries, lemon juice, and simple syrup and serve up a deliciously refreshing Fresh Strawberry Lemonade. It is the perfect way to cool off on a warm summer afternoon.
Somehow, with the kids out for summer break we seem busier then before. I mentioned before that my husband is retiring soon. He has been at the Air Force Academy for two years where he has taught Academy students how to fly. I’ve been busy planning for his final flight at the USAF Academy and of his military career.
A final flight or fini flight is a time-honored military tradition marking the last flight of a pilot’s time with a squadron.
It is a pretty fun experience. Airfields are very secure and no one aside from the pilots are allowed near the airplanes, hangers, or the runway. But, for this occasion, the family is invited to come out to the airfield and join in on the celebration.
The kids and I arrived early to set up for the party. Then, just as we finish setting up the food the air controller in the tower makes an announcement that my husband’s airplane is in the pattern about to land.
The kids and I hurry toward the tarmac. Apparently, from the pattern to landing happens quickly. We missed seeing him land! By the time we stepped outside, he was taxiing in toward the hangers.
Our kids have always been too young to remember any of his previous fini flights, so this was kind of like the first time they ever got to see him in an airplane.
Thankfully, the taxi way is pretty short at the academy, so we didn’t have to wait too long.
A long time ago before there were strict water rations, fire trucks would give a water salute. This is where they would spray a huge arch for the pilot to taxi through after they have landed. Today the water is on a smaller scale… much smaller! The pilots’ hand out 50lb pressurized tanks with water for the salute. Once he shuts down the airplane, we and all his fellow pilots are ready to spray him down with water.
The other pilots gave my son and daughter a tank to spray down their dad. As they handed the tanks to the kids they said what ever you do, don’t let him take them from you!
Well, as you can see he fought the pressurized water and commandeered the tank from my son. Everyone is laughing! Now that Dad has taken over the tank, the kids and everyone else around get sprayed. It’s like a grown-up water fight. 😀
It was a great celebration of many years of service! For now, the job hunt continues as my husband begins his terminal leave (aka paid vacation). Good news is he has a couple of job offers flying, but is still looking for his dream job.
Life is good! Now we are all home for summer with no work or school, sitting on the deck drinking Strawberry Lemonade 😀
I’ve gone crazy buying strawberries and need to use them before they get sad. So, I blended up strawberries, lemon juice, and a little simple syrup for a delicious and refreshing Fresh Strawberry Lemonade.
Strawberries are a great source of antioxidants and they are an excellent source of vitamin C, manganese, potassium, magnesium, vitamin K, folate, and fiber.
This Fresh Strawberry Lemonade is the perfect way to cool off on a warm afternoon.
