Well, yesterday was a mess. I could not get my head straight all day. First, I woke up believing it was Saturday when it was actually Tuesday. Later in the day, I kept thinking it was Wednesday. So, because of my confusion I forgot that both my kids had dental appointments. Then to top it all off I tried to get out of the shower by pulling on the shower door, when it pushes out to open. Sometimes, I think I have way too much going on in my head! So, today to help my brain out I’m loading up on some brain food with my Blueberry Banana Smoothie…
Blueberries
Lots of research has been done on the benefits that blueberries can provide. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants that can help rid the body and brain of free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative stress which leads to plague build up in the brain…this contributes to cognitive decline. The anthocyanins, which give blueberries their blue color, found in blueberries have been shown to protect and improve memory loss. One study showed that when people consumed 2 to 2 1/2 cups of blueberries daily for 12 weeks their memory improved! I’m all for having a better memory! 😀

I add milled flax to my smoothie to add to the thickness and to get some great omega-3’s, fiber and protein. With this smoothie, I add protein powder to increase its nutritive value and to help keep me feeling full. I prefer to use a protein powder that is free of artificial colors, flavor and sweeteners. Be sure to read the label when selecting a protein supplement.
- 1 cup ice
- 1 cup fresh blueberries, rinsed and trimmed
- 1 medium banana
- ¼ cup 0% plain greek yogurt
- 2 Tbsp milled flax
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 1 cup water
- Combine all ingredients in a blender.
- Blend until smooth.
- Add more ice for a thicker smoothie
